Lion‑Throned Mother, Blossom‑Crowned Goddess: Tracing The Empress
Fertility is older than tarot and older than language; it begins in clay. In the Seated Woman of Çatalhöyük, we see the Empress in her first body: thick‑hipped, heavy‑breasted, enthroned between animals, a Neolithic mother whose flesh stands for full granaries, surviving children, and a world that still answers to prayer. Here, fertility is survival, cosmology, and law, the understanding that the cycles of womb, soil, and cosmos are all braided together in the body of a Great Mother. The Empress card carries this dense memory beneath her silks: she is that same earth‑power refined, her throne now set in wheat and forest, her invitation not only to conceive life, but to conceive worlds, projects, artworks, relationships, tended like crops.
Centuries later, Botticelli paints Primavera, and the archetype steps into an orange grove. Venus stands at the quiet center, a courtly Empress of spring, holding the space while love, desire, and renewal move around her; Flora advances scattering flowers, the once‑pursued Chloris transformed into a walking garden. Between Çatalhöyük’s clay mother, Botticelli’s poised Venus, and Flora’s petal‑trail, we glimpse three faces of the same current: fertility as power, creativity as sacred function, wisdom as knowing when to root and when to bloom. The Empress is their late mask, a portable altar reminding us that our bodies, too, are fields; that every idea, spell, and love we dare to nurture is another spring called forth from ancient, patient ground.
